The carriers best positioned to manage this risk are those that treat workforce sustainability as an operational variable rather than a human resources matter. That means engaging with terminal partners on labor conditions as part of service-level discussions, factoring workforce stability into terminal selection decisions, and recognizing that the cheapest berth window is not always the most reliable one.
It also means acknowledging that the efficiency gains made possible by 24/7 operations carry a cost that does not always appear in the invoice—but that will, eventually, appear in the performance data.
A Reckoning on the Horizon
The maritime industry has made extraordinary strides in the technical dimensions of port efficiency.
